  • One of the keepers said that his tusks used to cross, so he had to move his trunk up and over them.  After they cut the tusks, he had it much easier.

  • These wire devices surround the elephant yard.  A keeper said they are electrified, and implied they were to keep the elephants back, and were to keep the visitors on the proper side of the fence, as well.

  • A mustang and burro exhibit was nearby. This is the neck of a mustang, which has its head down, eating.  A keeper described this as "freeze branding" which is more humane than "hot branding".  She said the freezing does something to the skin so the hair loses its pigment.  This is permanent, and she said they have a book describing the symbols used in the branding.
